Chapter 1 - Projects

The most important future Construction Projects

First:

The Passengers Building 2 – Kuwait Airport project:

The project situation until December 2014: Has been presented and preparing for tender.

Beneficiary: General Directorate of Civil Aviation.

The location: Al-Farwaniya governorate – 16 km South of Kuwait.

Total site space: 6.8 km²

Construction area: 708,000 m²

Building area on site: 185,000 m²

The project is located South of the current building, and is scheduled to drastically increase the absorptive capacity of

Kuwait International Airport, and is expected to become a new regional aerial axis in the Arabian Gulf. Some of the

main strategic goals of the project is to create a building that is equipped with the latest scientific technologies, which

will provide the passengers with the highest levels of comfort and sets a new environmental standards for the Airport

buildings around the world.

The new passengers building design responds to the climatic factors in the state of Kuwait . The design is inspired by

the local forms and materials under one roof for a building that consists of three symmetrical wings of departure gates,

each of which extends to 1.2 km, on the other hand, this vast area of the building is counterbalanced by a highly

accepted design.

In line with the trends of civilization, the terminal was designed to provide all services for travelers under one roof, as

well as reducing the need for travelers to move between floors.

The roof of the building has several hole of glass that has the ability of filtering daylight, while disposing the direct sun

light

The roof extends to the outside of the building to provide adequate protection from the sunlight for the entrance and

frontages, which were supported by concrete columns, of which their design is inspired by the flow of the traditional

sailing boats in Kuwait

The project also aims to win the golden standard in the Leading Standards in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED

Gold) as it aims to be the first passenger building in the world that meets with the terms of this level of environmental

accreditation. As the concrete structure provides appropriate thermal mass and the roof covers a large area of the

photovoltaic panels to fully take advantage of the solar energy.

A flexible main design has been put for the project so that the new passenger building site has a strategic location and

is capable of future expansions. The airport will initially accommodate about 13 million passengers annually, with the

possibility of expansion to accommodate up to 25 million passengers and up to 50 million with further development.
