Chapter 1

Al-Jahra Road Development project

The development of Jahra Road project is one of the largest multi-storeys infrastructure projects in Kuwait and it is almost the first of its kind.

The project is composed of three layers. On the international level it is considered one of the major and important projects, especially that

there is a huge team of workers of up to 3,600 workers that are spread over the sections of the whole project.

The project will be a turning point, and one of the solutions to the traffic congestion. The project will contribute significantly to the separation of

crossing traffic and local traffic and raise the capacity of the Jahra Road, which will reduce both traffic congestion and traffic accidents rates, it

will also contributes to raising the level of services to road users.

These modern technologies have several advantages, as it helps in the bridge’s construction, specially that the project consists of several

bridges and slopes that are called “The three-layers bridges”, which are all connected together, and that what makes the casting work so

precise and needs huge cranes and advanced, more efficient technologies . This technology will also contribute in decreasing the working

time by 20%.

The project needs 8395 pieces to complete the whole bridge, transported to the working fields through huge trailers. 12-16 pieces are

manufactured daily.

The hanged crane is a huge crane that is 140 meters high and weighs 500 Tons, so it is able to lift the bridge’s pieces which weighs about

120 Tons. The pieces are lifted above the bridge in order to install and tighten them with wires that can withstand high-pressure power.

The project’s stages:

Stage 1: From al-Jahra gate to the Airport road.

Stage 2: From the United States’ roundabout to the Hospitals road (Sabah Healthcare area).

Stage 3: From the hospitals road to the Gazali road.

Stage 4: From the Gazali road to the Airport road.

Stage 5: The Gazali intersection.

Structural works and concentrated in several levels :

The elevated structures include:

constructing 17.7 km of mainline viaduct by the pre-cast cutting method including 7.3 km of mainline Al

Jahra Road, 2.4 km link roads and 8 km of ramps, and it also includes 2 roundabouts for the viaduct and 10 pedestrian bridges .

The At grade structures include:

3.9 km of mainline Al Jahra Road, 1 km link roads, 15.1 services roads, 5 interchanges, 7 roundabouts .

The depressed structures include:

620 m of depressed road at Al Jahra road and relocation and refurbishment of services and utilities such

as: Storm water drainage 3.5 km - Water Lines 33 km - Sewage system 8 km- Electrical power cables 51 km- Telephone network 12 km .

And in January 2015 ,two bridges located above the United Nations roundabout were opened to link the Fourth Ring Road and Al-

Jahra road.

In October 2015, the second ring road roundabout on Al Jahra road development project and detour on the 2

nd

ring road with Al

Jahra road interchange, A part of the project was opened for the traffic movement in January 2016 and that from the Al Jahidh street

intersection to post after the United States’ roundabout, in both directions and the total length of the opened part is about 4 km .

In May 2016, a partial opening within the project works for the service road which starts after the beginning of the intersection of Al

Jahidh Street and before the United States’ roundabout towards Al Jahra (1.75 km), In July 2016, a new partial openings in the Jahra

Road and Jamal Abdul Nasser Street Development Projects, which entail a 1.25km directional ramp on the Jahra Road connecting

to the new entrance ramp on the Jamal Abdul Nasser street extending 1.5km into the recently opened 4 km section of the elevated

Jamal Abdul Nasser Development Project’s viaduct heading from Grenada to Kuwait city to serve the hospital area. The directional

ramp is a 30 meter high (4

th

level) division from the recently opened portion of the elevated Jahra Road viaduct, opposite to the

General Traffic Department, connecting to the Jamal Abdul Nasser project’s 8m high (3

rd

level) ramp over the hospitals road.

In November 2016 the main Upper Jahra bridge has been opened entirely with a length of approximately 5 km, and so the Jahra

bridge has been completely opened for the traffic movement.
