Chapter 4

– Sewage Systems and Water Treatment –

A brief about The Waste Water Treatment

Maintaining the environment from pollution is the most important challenges that face the human to ensure the health and

welfare of the community. It is a measure of promote and progress of societies. Sewage treatment process and the reuse are

an essential element of protecting the environment in general and the marine environment in particular. It is a very important

process to what the water carries of contaminants. The water from the sewage treatment process is an important economic

source.

Kuwait is considered one of the leading countries in the sewage system, where the state has paid great attention to the

provision of health services. Since the sixties, The Ministry of Public Works had implemented and developed sewerage

services, where sewage treatment began to be used in landscaping fodder farms projects in more than 30 years. Wastewater

treatment has become at present time the main source of all kinds of agricultural irrigation projects.

Sewage treatment is done through purification of waste water impurities, suspended solids and contaminants of organic

material to make it possible to be reused or disposed in watercourses without any pollution. This process is done in special

equipped facilities to sewage treatment at several stages (physical, chemical and biological).

There are multiple sources of wastewater such as discharge of domestic, industrial, rain water and water leaching (to reduce

ground water level) etc.. And are disposed through the drainage pipes and then processed through:

Tertiary treatment, which includes a three-phase processing primary , secondary, and tertiary, which are processed in the

stations of A-Riqqa, UM Al-Hayman, Sabah Al-Ahmad ( Laa Al-Khairan), Kabd and Al-Wafra. and then pumping treated water

to any watercourse, which can be used in agriculture, golf courses, and public parks or to be pumped underground to refill the

aquifer.

The Quad-treatment in Al-Sulaybia plant is an additional process that treats sewage to make it valid for human consumption

(drinking).

The residential areas in Kuwait has been divided into three main regions and each region is made up of lines, networks and

pumping stations and treatment plants

The Northern region includes:

Al-Jahra pumping station: it serves Al-Jahra area. It transfers the wastewater to Kabd sewage treatment plant.

Central Region includes:

Mishref pumping station: it serves Hawally governorate. It transfers the wastewater to Al-Ardiya pumping station.

Al-Riggae pumping station: it serves Kuwait City and Al-Farwaniya governorates. It transfers the wastewater to Al-Ardiya

pumping station (BOT) and to Al-Sulaybia treatment plant.

The southern region includes:

Al-Eqaila pumping station: it serves Al- Ahmadi and Mubarak Al-Kabeer governorates. It transfers the wastewater to Al-Riqqa

sewage treatment plant.

Umm Al-Hayman pumping station: It transfers the wastewater to Umm Al-Hayman sewage treatment plant and Al-Wafra.

A14 and A15 pumping stations: they serve the coastline areas. They transfer the wastewater Al-Riqqa sewage treatment plant.

Al-Khairan and Sabah Al-Ahmed sewage treatment plant: it serves Al-Khairan and Sabah Al-Ahmed residential area.
