Chapter 1 - Projects
Developing and improving the road network performance is one of the most important goals and
strategies of Ministry of Public Works. The development of road network performance shall be
according to the latest global and international standard specifications. Also, achieving smooth flow
traffic of the road network by preparing studies, plans, designs and setting strategies and budgets
for all of road projects starting from regional, main roads, highways and bridges of Kuwait.
One of the most major projects that the ministry is :
First :
Shaikh Jaber Al- Ahmad Al-Sabah Bridge (main bridge) project :
Commencement date: November 2013.
Percentage of achievement till December 2014: 25.51% .
This project is one of the greatest projects in transportation domain and infrastructure of Kuwait and the whole area.
This project shall lead to a new path of development . It shall achieve the vision of his highness the Amir of Kuwait
Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in transforming Kuwait to a financial, commercial and a global center.
This project is located in Kuwait bay, between Kuwait city (Al-Asemah) and Al-Sabiya. The goal of this project is to
shorten the distance from (104) km to(36) km, half an hour approximately instead of an hour and a half.
The bridge is considered as a link between Al-Asema and Al-Sabiya which is going to be a complete city with an
accommodation of more than 750 thousand person.
The bridge starts from Al-Ghazali highway road junction with Jamal Abd-AlNasser Street at Shuwaikh port to Al-Sabiya
highway to the new Al-Sabiya city.
The project includes an upper road (3) km long, a bridge of a low height (27) km long. The bridge will be passing
through Kuwait bay with a main high bridge through the marine passage (120) m wide, (23) m high . So that the ships
can pass to Al- Doha port.
The project also includes construction of two artificial islands. The first island is going to be near to Kuwait city with a
space of (31) hectares. The second island is going to be near to Al-Sabiya city with a space of (31) hectares. In
addition to a linking road to Al-Sabiya coast. It will be (6) km long.
Each direction includes ( 3 ) traffic lanes and two emergency lanes along the bridge. The required speed of the bridge
is (120) km per hour.
The implementation of the bridge ( work of action ) includes :
The number of the piles is approximately (1500) more than (50) m long, their dimension reaches (3) m in some
locations including a number of (1326) piers.
A number of (1052) precast box girders their lengths are approximately from (40) m to (60) m.
A permanent hospitality center and joined adapters will be provided at the artificial islands .In addition to services
buildings and a marina .
The bridge has two controlling centers in coordination with the Ministry of Interior Affairs in order to act immediately at
emergency cases by utilizing a developed electronic system such as (ITS) and (SCADA). These systems are complete
observation and controlling systems that are working along the bridge path in order for the vehicles to pass.
