Chapter 1

The Construction of Bridges and Intersections on the Western Side

of Jamal AbdulNasser Road project

Commencement date: August 2014

The project is located in the western side of the State of Kuwait and extends parallel to the Coastal road, as it starts from Gernata area

through Sulaibikhat and Doha, heading all the way to Sheikh/Jaber City residential area. It is from an integrated plan of the Ministry of Public

Works to convert the current road into a world-class expressway that extends from Sheikh/Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Subah City residential area to

Kuwait City, which will raise the current road’s capacity, reduce traffic congestion and accidents rate, and achieve high levels of safety. It also

aims to connect the areas of (Gernata – Sulaibikhat – Doha – North of Sulaibikhat – Jaber Al Ahmed) to the government, education, and

health bodies that are located in the area next to the road’s extension.

The total length of the main road is 6.5 m, with a width of 32 m, and consists of 3 lanes per direction in addition to emergency lanes. The

project also includes 3 upper bridges above 4 main roundabouts with a total length of 1650 meters for the bridges.

On the sides of the upper bridges, service roads will be constructed that consist of two lanes in each direction to connect with the residential

areas in order to be able to enter and leave the main road with the construction of 4 roundabouts on the main intersections under the bridges.

The project also includes the removal of the current pedestrian bridges and the construction of 4 new pedestrian bridges that are closed and

air-conditioned, and equipped with electric stairs, in addition to 8 bus stops on the sides of the pedestrian bridges.

The project has been divided into several stages and new alternative roads have been constructed, taking into account the safety standards

and maintain the flow of vehicles and secure the entrances and exits of the neighboring residential areas to the project, with maintaining the

safety of the workers in the site throughout the implementation period. The current services are also being removed (infrastructure; rainwater

and sewage drainage, water pipes, and irrigation, lighting, and electricity networks) that contradict with the project works, and transfer them to

new tracks by the new roads’ design.

The project works consist of:

The foundations of the bridge that consist of concrete piles with a diameter of 150 meters that are poured into the ground to depths ranging

from 18 to21 meters that are poured on by the bridge’s bases and concrete piers at distances of 50 meters, and heights ranging from 15 to 18

meters, in addition to the shoulders of the road at the beginning and the end of the bridge.

The bridge works consist of:

The bridge’s tile with a width of 16 meters per direction, it is a pre-stressed beam box that is poured into the site on 50 meters long breaks.

The sloping road for the rise and descent of the bridge is created by walls on both sides that consist of pre-cast concrete slabs that are

installed mechanically in the soil.
