Chapter 4 - Sewage systems and water treatment
Sixth :
AlSulaibiya STP :
It is considered one of the leading projects, not only in the region, but in the whole world, as it is one of the biggest
Treatment Plants in the world in terms of size and energy capacity in which reverse osmosis is used in treating
wastewater.
This is the first infrastructure project with this size that uses the B.O.T system, with an investment period of 30 years.
The station treats approximately 60% of the total wastewater amount in Kuwait. Expansion works is in progress and is
expected to finish in May 2016 to accommodate 600,000 m3/day.
The station was established in 2004 with a designed capacity of 425,000 m3/day. It currently receives 450,000 m3/day
of wastewater from the new pumping station in Ardhiya, where the primary treatment takes place, then the wastewater
is pumped through three pipelines with a diameter of 1400mm each, and stretches to a distance of 25 km from Ardiya
to the treatment plant in Sulaibiya, where the water treatment is processed through several stages that ends with the
advance treatment, which aims to sterilize the water and remove any solid substances in it which increases the purity
of the treated water.
The station produces Quad-treated water through the following stages:
1. The primary treatment phase (physical therapy) is
processed in the new pumping station in Ardiya where
the sand, fats and other planktons are removed.
2. Bilateral treatment stage (biological treatment) which
is processed in Sulaibiya, it has an aeration basin that is
divided into three sections:
Section I: phosphate removal.
Section II: nitrates removal.
Section III: ventilation by compressed air to oxidize
organic materials.
3. Filter stage using a filtration system
4. advanced processing stage where the water is
collected in a basin and pumped to the high-resolution
filters building (Ultra Filtration), which includes filters that
are made of membranes with ultra-precision pores,.
These filters fully remove suspended particles and
microbes. These filters are cleaned periodically by
reversal laundry operations that take place on a regular
basis and automatically.
5. Water flows from the ultra-precision filtering building to
the reverse-osmosis building, which consists of 6
independent lines of purification, each of them contains 7
units with a total of 20832 filters.
6. The quad-treated water is best used through
transporting the water to the Water Control Center in
Sulaibiya (DMC), and then pump it to Abdaly and Wafra
farms, and the surplus goes to Om Al-Rimam lake
