The roads in the 50’s were narrow as it was in the most countries around the world. It’s engineering and the materials

used to pave the roads weren’t capable of handling weather changes. A rainwater drainage network was also not

available at that time.

With the flow of the oil, growing population and economic activities, and the expansion of urban construction, the

Ministry of Public Works became responsible for developing the roads network in accordance with this blessed

renaissance and that is according to the following strategy:

-Linking the outskirts of the country with a network of main and secondary roads which extend in a radial manner in

the form of a fan based in Kuwait City. These roads intersect and connect with each other by seven ring roads that

start from the first ring until the seventh ring road. On these ring roads a number of concrete and metal bridges have

been held in order to facilitate the flow and traffic flow.

-All residential areas have been supplied with roads and necessary infrastructure services by the structural plan of the

State of Kuwait.

-Creating the Arabian Gulf Street to become a front for a civilized Kuwait.

Roads development strategy in Kuwait

The Ministry of Public Works has conducted the necessary studies to assess the roads network’s situation, therefore

putting a strategy for the roads development in Kuwait as follows:

1-Supply all the existing and new residential areas according to the structural plan with roads and necessary services

such as rainwater and sanitary networks

2-Establishment of a network of highways to overcome the traffic jams, facilitates the flow of traffic and avoids road

accidents. The following foundations has been considered when designed:

-Supply all residential, investment, industrial and commercial areas with roads and infrastructure services.

-Increase the number of tracks so that each direction contains no less than three lanes.

-Total isolation of traffic in each direction in order to avoid accidents.

-Regulate highways’ entry and exit through intersection bridges to increase the smooth flow of traffic.

-Providing guidance and traffic signs in both Arabic and English.

-Cancel all traffic signals on major highways by establishing the road network.

- Lighting the main, border and internal roads.

- Regular maintenance and ongoing network highways to maintain efficiency

3-Improve the performance of the main roads that are associated with the highways network to raise its performance

level in order to match the highways’ level

4-Linking the agricultural areas and petroleum exploration areas with main roads linked to the highway network

5-Developing the international roads (Nuwaisib road – Salmi road – Abdili road), and linking them to the highways

network.

6-Providing all roads in Kuwait with the proper lighting network in order to increase the safety level on the roads and

reduce accidents in the dark
